Standard ExpressRoute uses an ExpressRoute connectivity provider to establish connectivity to Microsoft's network. ExpressRoute Direct allows organisations to connect directly to Microsoft's global network using dedicated ports, providing greater control over connectivity and supporting dual 10-Gbps, 100-Gbps, or 400-Gbps connectivity.

Yes. Multiple ExpressRoute circuits can be used across different locations and connectivity providers. ExpressRoute Global Reach can also link ExpressRoute circuits to create private connectivity between geographically distributed on-premises networks.

ExpressRoute circuits use redundant connectivity, and each peering is configured with a pair of BGP sessions. Organisations can also deploy multiple circuits and geographically diverse connectivity to improve resilience and support failover strategies.

Microsoft peering can provide connectivity to supported Microsoft online services, but Microsoft does not generally recommend ExpressRoute for Microsoft 365 and requires authorisation for specific scenarios. ExpressRoute should therefore be evaluated based on the specific Microsoft 365 requirement rather than presented as the default connectivity model.
